Chapter Twelve

Natalia found a quiet hotel down a dark road, 50 kilometers further outside the city. She parked around the back and then checked in by herself, paying cash in euros before returning to the truck for Multinovic. To avoid the front desk clerk, she took him through a rear door, down a short hallway and into their room, laying him onto his back on the single queen-sized bed. The man was a mess, with cuts and scrapes and holes all over his body. He looked like he’d just been through a war, and in a sense he had. “We’d better take a look at this,” Natalia pointed to his abdomen.

“I don’t think it’s terminal.”

“It better not be. I’m not about to live with that guilt for the rest of my life.”

“What guilt? You’re not the one who shot me.”

“I might as well have been. You were happy as a clam there in Serbia until I came along and ruined everything.”

“Don’t kid yourself. I wasn’t so happy.”

“Well, you didn’t have a bullet in your gut, now, did you?”

“It’s not your fault, Natalia.”

“Come on, let’s see it.”

Multinovic removed his hand from his blood-covered shirt. As gently as she could, Natalia eased the fabric up until the wound was fully visible. It appeared that the bullet had both entered and exited on the far left side of his torso. Blood still flowed from the holes, soaking into the bed beneath him. Natalia quickly ran to the bathroom and grabbed a clean towel, coming back to press it in place. “You really do need to see a doctor.”

“You know what happens if I go to see a doctor. With a wound like this, they’ll have to call the police.”

“Not if you have enough cash to persuade them otherwise.”

“I don’t want to take the chance.”

“You’d rather die here in some cheap hotel?”

“I’m not going to die!”

“Even if you don’t bleed out on me, it’s going to get infected!”

Multinovic gritted his teeth. Natalia wasn’t sure if it was from the pain of his injuries, or his frustration at her persistence. “Get my phone, it’s in my right pocket,” he said.

“You hold the towel,” she replied. When he gave it pressure, she managed to slide his phone out.

“Hold it in front of my face to unlock it.”

Natalia did as instructed and then Multinovic voice dialed a man named Zivko Petrov and placed the call on speaker. On the third ring, the man answered in a jolly tone, though Natalia didn’t understand the language. Multinovic greeted him and the pair had a rapid conversation. Petrov’s tone went from cheerful, to concerned, to exceedingly worried. Multinovic gave him the name of the hotel and then hung up.

“Who was that?” said Natalia.

“An old friend of mine, from way back. He’s a medical professional, based not far from here. He’s on his way.”

“The man is a doctor?”

“Not exactly.”

“What is that supposed to mean? He either is, or he isn’t.”

“He’s a vet.”

“A veterinarian? Are you serious?”

“You said to call a doctor. This is the best I can do.
